Desire of Result: The Silent Killer and Why ( and my Daily Work )
Daily Work. Saturday: Morning ….LBRP and object concentration for 30 minutes. Night: Inner Smile Work To sleep Sunday: 3 hours Gigong work and Tai Chi Work with Master Matt ( oouch, that hurt) That about did me for the day, 3 hours of Gigong work... yep. Done. Monday: Morning, yeah about that. Lunch: Did about 20 minutes of Gigong work, but did walk, will walk tomorrow. Dinner: Fed the spirits, but more then that had the house guests ( aka little munchkins, help me feed the ancestors). Seeing them help and at least one get into it, and I could tell she was starting to pick some stuff up... Well it makes me quickly re-assess a kids book of actual magic not merely on wicca as a religious practice.. Its going to happen. Post dinner, Me and Soror Phoenix were working on some stuff to help out some things in her life. As it turns out, Tarot kinda of revealed that the first take on a solution was off. Injecting more fear into her essence was a bad idea. We together personified many of the issues into a Thought form, bound that thought form into a bottle... and then I alchemical destroyed and transformed that thought-form that was bound to herbs, paper, and some vodka tincture and transmuted the energy/components of through fire and ritual. This was followed by a sigil enchantment that used pain gnosis. Techniques to do this are contained in Hands On Chaos Magic Tuesday: Morning Yeah about that. Lunch: Deliberately taking a break. Dinner: Re-adjusting Ancestral altars, have tons of business work to do, but will be doing some Solar work today
Desire of Result: The Silent Killer and Why
No one topic about magic frustrates people more then the idea of the desire of result. In fact, more then one person I have worked with just doesn't get this particular notion and will argue with teachers on this point. Probably no topic is as important, or as glossed over. In fact, desire of result is just Peter Carroll's name for a curious phenomenon about how magic works and more correctly one of the big reasons for why it does not work. One common complaint, is how can you do magic for something and not want it. AKA what is the point of doing any magic at all. From a results orientated as opposed to spiritual perspective this is a fair question? But the question indicates a lack of understanding about what the Desire of Result is, the difference between want and a compulsion, and where we spend the mental energy. Most of how people expect magical results to occur has much more to do with a demon of entitlement, and the magic pill, then the process. I will talk about that in a minute. Enchantment from a chaos magic point of view says embed what you want into your subconscious mind, and forget about the magic. If you do it, this does work amazingly well, but honestly that forgetting part is the single greatest point of failure in any magic. Once you do magic, you want it now now now now.
If we look at the desire of result in a different more nuanced view studying the different models of magic, however, a slightly different picture emerges as you practice more. Not desiring what you ask for is very difficult. This is exactly why Hands On Chaos Magic, says to start doing enchantments and operations for things you do not care about. This is exactly the same logic in almost every post modern book on magic. It is also the single thing, that people but want to get “training” ( who are not getting results) will argue with me the most about. First, the desire of result, in my humble opinion, becomes less of an issue as you progress in magical operations because there are different expectations and internalizations for why and how magic works.
The desire of result usually is a type of mental compulsion that ruminates over the magical work in a repetitive fashion. Essentially, what happens, is you think about I just did this working for X, and now Y will happen and you are imagining how awesome Y is. The problem really comes from the amount of gargage we all have inside. First, in 99.999% of people, there is very little belief in the efficacy of magic. This is an internalized near subconscious belief in how the world actually works.
From a psychological point of view, lets do a simple mind exercise ( assuming magic is all in our heads). Do X magic Ritual Y will happen as a result of X magic is not possible ------------------------- Subconscious associations Y is not possible.
When Y fails, it supports and backs up the presiding believe that Magic is not possible which is an internal complex already well supported. When going over the spellwork in your mind, it also brings up that association which again keeps the subconscious mind working against the intention of X.
This is of course, provided that the original ritual was done with enough intensity to bypass the out and out resistance of the psychic Censor/critical factor. As you are going back to the ritual while conscious, it allows these additional internal constructs to link into the subconscious desire.
We can go further with this Desire of result breakdown, and this will further hammer the importance of daily work, as advised by my book, Hands On Chaos Magic.
Do X magic Ritual for Y, Keep going over it in mind outside of ritual and
Spellwork X gets connected to Magic is not real Christian Conditioning ( what your doing is satanic etc, and other garbage), guilt. Worthy problems, internal issues The burning soup Host of other memes etc.
Essentially, it gets so connected to so many things, that the subconscious mind gets confused and stops manifesting anything since from its perspective there is no clarity on what you actually want. The clarity of intention is not there in the subconscious mind. When most people focus on how they are going to get what they want, inherent in that thinking is a lot of unspoken assumptions on what they DO not have. I am going to get implies, what I do not have. Even in the Law of Attraction, a little talked about aspect of that, is to think about things as if you already DO have it. The fact is you can not think about what you are going to receive without activating a trans-derivational search ( from neuro-linguistic programming) on what you do not have. Essentially, you can not activate a future sense of acquisition, without first activating a presence sense of lack. Although the conscious mind gets “TIME”, the subconscious mind sees the present sense of lack and brings more of the same. It does not get the future time at all.
From an Energy perspective, this implies that the energy of the spellwork is never actually released to God, Goddess, Chaos, Tao, insert your metaphor for the universe here. The spell is stuck inside your mind and linked to basically imprisoned within. Granted, I like the information metaphor more then the energy one, but spellwork causes subtle changes in the world. This is much like Chemistry. A+B => C with added energy. Not releasing the energy, means there is not the specific energy needed to transform A+B=> C, so nothing happens. This is a simple metaphor and when we move into the information model of magic, the person broadcasting the wrong things at the subconscious level and probably even worse bring the opposite things too them.
Simply put, without trance state, going over the outcome, or otherwise going back to the spellwork allows the set of internal issues, conscious neurosis, and issues to attach to and have their say about the spellwork.... because of the linkages formed after the fact.
From a spirit perspective, the situation is slightly more problematic. If you have asked for a result, and then keep going over it and are in a spirit model perspective, a spirit can rightfully say you are confused and do not know what you want, because you lack the faith in it to manifest the result. So why should it do anything, when you don't really believe in it in the first place. More assertive spirits will bring the opposite. Its kinda of like insulting a mechanic while they are doing the work, some mechanics will just screw with you at that point.
Often, in practice, what occurs? I initially called this a compulsion, but it can lead to a real negative state. First, people associated the spell work with the lack sense. If you are doing the daily work, and self-reflection, this can be minimized. In practice, often, people do the spell work and do the opposite of what they need to to have the ritual actually succeed. So people who cast a love spell, will be mean to the partners or go out less. Someone who casts for a job, goes over how awesome that new job will be and stops applying for jobs as much. This comes from a psychological mismatch and misunderstanding on how magic work. I did magic, so I don't have to work as hard. Going back to the chemistry analogy, A+B => C with adding in Energy. But it also usually with organic chemistry assumes that A is in a state to react with B. Effectually, when people do this sort of stuff, they are moving A and B out of a state they can react with each other. This notion of magic being a cure all comes from the hollywood and modern cultural notion of magic, that has been implanted in our minds. When everything is a quick fix and a pill, why should n't magic work the same way. Anthropologically, the evidence is clear that this not how the ancient farmers or hunters would have interacted with magic and the world.
Psychologically, doing a spell then doing the opposite in the physical world confuses the subconscious mind. Energy wise, it actively provides resistance to the new flows of energy. Spirit wise, they will just assume your not worth it, if you are unwilling to do what you need to in the equation.
One critique is still, then why do magic if you have to back up the magic with physical actions, but then that chemistry metaphor is again provides some great food for though.
A + B = C with energy Added
Magic is often the extra “oomph” to create a combination that otherwise would not have existed. Said a different way, it creates possibilities that otherwise might not have been possible. Of course, A and B still has to be in the right state, which is a way of saying the Internal Universe and the probabilities ( which both can be worked with in different ways) have to be right to create a state where said reaction is possible. Magic really is the act of creating and manifesting new possibilities in line what what you truly want by manipulating internal and external patterns/energies/constructs. Of course, that means figuring out what you really want, changing yourself in cases, and whole lot of assumptions that will form a different blog.
A better way to deal with this problem of desire of result, is when you start to think about an outcome you have asked for or think about a working you have done is to just tell yourself you have already successfully took care of that and it is already successful. Then proceed to back that up by doing everything you need to in the physical world to get the results you want.
Need more information about the techniques on how to do many of this. Get my book at Hands on Chaos Magic . Really it covers a lot of the techniques aspect of how to get past yourself. Ask for it at your local occult/pagan/new age store and do ask them to carry it ( borders will carry it too if you ask them ).

Hi Danielivan,
I am out hanging at Also Goods a fair amount if you come out. Now of course, there is ways around the desire of result problem ( which mostly involves getting to the point in the self, that the result is self evident).
Hope to see you soon.
