Involuntary reverse breathing?Hey, My name is ngine and i recently bought Hand-on Chaos Magick. In it is described a breathing technique which is used in Qi-Gong, in which the diaphragm is used 'in reverse' while breathing. Synchronisticly i've been having alot of trouble breathing in a relaxed manner. Pressure on my chest, feeling of anxiety, mental and emotional disstress and stomach problems. I've been having this type of problem for a couple of years now and no matter how hard I try I can't seem to get myself to breath normally (as in; breathing in a relaxed and deep manner). Lately these problem seems to have be getting worse, resulting in insomnia and me being under alot of stress with my job doesn't do wonders neither. Now I think I might be doing reverse breathing involunatily, since the symptoms i've been having are attributed to incorrect reverse breathing (my sister used to have the same type of symptoms by the way). My question is; 1. How can I be sure my assumption is correct? Any other magickal means to achieve this are also greatly welcomed. Thank you in advance, - Ngine

Re: Involuntary reverse breathing?
Greetings, this is my first post here. I think I know you from another board, ngine. I'm a medical editor/writer with background in yoga, yada-yada. I'd take Andreih's doctor-friends advice. You will have the symptoms you describe if you habitually breath shallowly and rapidly from the upper lungs rather than easily from the lower and full lungs. Certainly there are yoga breathing techniques out there in which the diaphragm and other breathing apparatus is used in unconventional ways to achieve certain effects, but what your doing sounds more like habitual shallowing breathing to me. Certain types of breathing patterns mimic what happens during the fight/flight response, so that your brain chemistry is tricked into thinking that you have a reason to be anxious. Then the neurochemistry becomes conditioned and effort and skill is needed to literally reconfigure things. You may also have a problem with stress/anxiety/emotional adaptibility that is having an effect on your body ("somatization"). First, you need to find out if something is physically wrong cardiopulmonarily speaking. If your otherwise OK, you may need coaching in deep relaxation and diaphragmatic breathing techniques as well as thought-transformation techniques. Seems as if some of Andreih's material might be helpful there.
Re: Involuntary reverse breathing?
Actually I did confirm with a medical doctor about this, if you did reverse Chi breathing all the time, you would have died.
Here is what was said
"d say he was somatisizing, and that he has a primary anxiety disorder. I'd probably prescribe a course of Progressive Muscular Relaxation, and have him do the regular diaphram breathing after relaxed - he should be informed that when he's not thinking about it he breathes normally, or he'd be dead.
Asthma and emphysema ought to be ruled out if that doesn't work, and he should go see a pulmonologist, but assuming that everything checks out and the guy still can't breathe, he probably needs treatment with an SSRI."
Progressive Muscular Relaxation is infact the OFFNUNG techniques covered in Hands on Chaos Magic, so thats a good place to start as a first step. Which mind you was going to be my advice actually on likes of progressive relaxation which involves a combination of relaxing each muscle through visualization or a combination of tensing then relaxing. Because I wanted to make sure nothing I was saying would possibly be dangerous. Nice to See I am in sync, ince I thought it might be an anxiety problem as well....nice to be in sync there with my good Doctor friend.
If the Progressive Muscular Relaxation does not work, do see a doctor. If it does work, you should be able to with practice retrain the breathing patterns. The key here has he alludes to, is not not concentrate on the breathing, instead concentrate on relaxing each muscle, then concentrate on breathing normally for as long as you can.
Again, this is a situation
where definately would be helpful and recommending seeing a doctor. I think the Progressive Relaxation will work though
Definately
Re: Involuntary reverse breathing?
ARRRRRRR, there be creatures of habit round these parts. Breath deeper more often and without notice. Do some sigil and mantra work to make yourself breath in a relaxed manor unconsciously. Have you tried breathing in a different way other than relaxed breathing or the method used in Qi-Gong?
And if that doesnt work, take potato's advice.
